The freedom of a kayak to head into all kinds of waterways makes it a terrific boon for fishermen. Before heading out for a kayak-fishing trip, there are a few tips to keep the excursion safe and successful.
One thing that kayak fishermen can do that regular anglers aren’t able to accomplish is trolling through the water. Several species of fish are attracted to this surface activity, such as salmon, trout, and cod. The movement of the oar through the water creates a more natural path, and the fish will be far more inclined to investigate than with a motorized boat. Be sure to investigate which mid-water column fish are in the area to choose the best lure for trolling.
When trying the trolling technique, a type II or III fly line will help the fly sink to the right depth. The depth is critical for trolling during kayak fishing, but if a floating line is the only available option, consider using a sink tip on the fly to get it to the correct depth for trolling.
An overlooked necessity for kayak fishermen is the need to tie down their equipment in a way that keeps it easily accessible from a seated position. A great way to get everything placed correctly is by having a friend help you tie down your equipment. While in a seated position, it’s easier to decide the best place for each piece of gear.
Accidents and spills are a part of kayaking. Tie down loose items and attach floats to the rod and reel. With everything in place, nothing stands in the way of a successful kayak-fishing trip.
